Tire Testing

Many of Michigan Scientific’s instrumentation equipment can be used for tire testing. From standard transducers and signal transmission equipment to custom solutions, MSC has measuring devices that are useful for a variety of testing.

Overview

Michigan Scientific Wheel Torque Transducers accurately measure the driving and braking torque between the tire and the hub of a vehicle wheel. Independent torque measurements at each wheel can be used to test the stability control and traction control systems of electric vehicles. Wheel Torque Transducers can also be used to measure aerodynamic drag, tire rolling drag, and bearing seal drag. It gathers data that can be used in braking systems, vehicle stability, and tire testing.

Real-world data of the forces and moments determined with a Wheel Force Transducer on a vehicle wheel is extremely valuable for all parts of tire testing and validation. It is important to have accurate measurements of how the tire interacts with both the vehicle and the environment, and how that may impact vehicle handling for the driver. When the tire starts to slip due to a low coefficient of friction on ice, snow, or even sand, the data will show an increase in wheel speed in conjunction with a decrease in force on the wheel.

Measurements from the TrueSlip aid in understanding the relationship between the direction in which a vehicle is oriented and the direction in which it moves. Slip angle measurements evaluate tire performance by comparing the direction in which tires are pointing to the direction in which they are traveling.

Our Three Axis Load Cells have a vast array of capabilities, including force sensors for feedback control of test stands. A single load cell can measure three axes simultaneously and allows users to simulate and measure cornering. Three Axis Load Cells are capable of being mounted to both the input and reaction side of traction testing. The tire forces are measured with a load cell connected to the axle while positioning a load cell beneath the test surface allows the road surface forces to be measured. The compact size of our load cells allows for easy mounting on test fixtures in small spaces.
