Ted NachazelApril 4, 2024BlogD2, D3, D3X Amplifier Background The current generation of Wheel Force Transducer (WFT) Amplifiers from Michigan Scientific prioritizes time efficiency, minimizing downtime, and offering enhanced data to users. The D2 WFT amplifiers are compatible with CT2 User Interface Boxes and feature an internal bi-axial accelerometer that measures accelerations in the X and Z directions up to 100 g. Meanwhile, the new D3 & D3X WFT Amplifiers are compatible with CT3 User Interface Boxes and are equipped with an internal tri-axial accelerometer that measures accelerations in the X, Y, and Z directions up to 100 g. Any D2 Amplifier is upgradable to a D3 or D3X Amplifier, with the primary distinction between D3 and D3X amplifiers being the slip ring model they pair with. Removable Smart Sensors Each D2, D3, & D3X type Wheel Force Transducer Amplifier is furnished with a removable Smart Sensor, containing all calibration information, recent zero values, and test set-up selections. Swapping out the Smart Sensor is as straightforward as changing a SIM card in a cell phone. Moreover, all D2, D3, & D3X amplifiers feature universal digitizing amplifier circuit boards compatible with any Michigan Scientific WFT. The unique information applicable to each transducer is stored within the removable Smart Sensor. Our customer-centric design aims to minimize potential downtime for our global clientele. In the event of a WFT issue stemming from the amplifier, another amplifier of the same housing size can be seamlessly substituted without a reduction in accuracy. Michigan Scientific and its international sales and service partners maintain a supply of ‘Spare’ amplifiers for such instances. To utilize a spare D2, D3, or D3X amplifier, detach the smart sensor from the problematic amplifier by removing the two #4-40 screws with a 3/32 inch Allen wrench, then extract it from the amplifier base. Next, install the Smart Sensor into the Spare amplifier following the same procedure as removal, ensuring the serial number of the Smart Sensor matches that of the WFT. The Spare amplifier can be utilized with the WFT in place of the original amplifier without sacrificing accuracy. D2 and D3 Amplifiers have proven instrumental in avoiding significant downtime for customers on multiple occasions. Michigan Scientific and its international sales and service agents have been able to provide a Spare amplifier the next day, which was quickly installed, and accurate testing was able to resume. Internal ± 100g Accelerometers D2, D3, & D3X Amplifiers share identical internal MEMs-based Accelerometer components rated to ± 120 g. Michigan Scientific currently restricts its output to a ±100 g range, which encompasses nearly all customer applications. These accelerometers feature an internal 1000 Hz (-3 dB) low-pass filter. Leveraging WFT Amplifiers’ internal Accelerometers provides users with additional valuable information at no extra setup time or cost. The accelerometer outputs are available on both the CAN and Analog signal outputs. Lena LukowskiMarch 6, 2024BlogElectric vehicle companies are continuously adapting components to meet new standards and reduce risks. The industry demands higher capacity, extended range, improved performance, and faster charging. To meet these new standards, extensive research and development for batteries is required. Developing high-powered batteries comes with both performance and safety challenges. One large risk to EV safety and performance is the temperature management within the Li-ion batteries.  The Li-ion batteries make up to 30% of the vehicle’s cost and are the heaviest part of the vehicle. They are constantly being upgraded to provide the highest performance possible, but with these developments come new risks. Thermal runaway can occur when the battery short circuits and starts overheating uncontrollably. This in turn spreads to other cells and can be hard to contain, potentially causing fires within the EV. Mechanical and thermal testing is conducted to help reduce these risks. Some of these tests include puncture testing of the material to reduce the risk of thermal runaway and utilizing climate chambers to test the battery at different, controlled temperatures. It is also vital to have onboard testing equipment to monitor battery temperature for performance and safety. Thermal management units are critical for monitoring these changes within the vehicle and are important for testing and consumer use. Due to the extreme risk of thermal runaway, this thermal management equipment must have superior accuracy and reliability.  Micro-TC Michigan Scientific Corporation (MSC) offers a variety of products to help monitor these conditions and ensure accuracy in data measurement. The Micro-TC is a thermocouple connector with a built-in amplifier, allowing for measurements to be taken without any extra amplifying equipment. The amplifier provides cold junction compensation and amplifies the thermocouple signal to a linear 5 mV/°C over a measurable range of -25 °C to 400 °C. The measurable range expands to -200 °C to 970 °C with the use of post-processing polynomials. It also accepts a wide power supply range. The small size of the unit also allows it to be used in harder-to-reach areas of the vehicle. This makes the Micro-TC ideal for monitoring temperature data within the battery to help prevent thermal runaway during use. Slip Rings with Amplifiers Signals can also be connected through MSC’s Slip Ring systems. This provides another option for thermocouple data acquisition with different means of mounting onto rotating parts of the vehicle. The temperature measurements taken by the slip rings and amplifier assembly will also determine if energy is being lost unnecessarily through heat, maximizing the vehicle’s efficiency. This simplistic solution for thermal management is an excellent choice depending on the allowable space within the vehicle.  Thermocouple amplifiers can also be used with MSC’s Slip Ring systems. This provides the option of making temperature measurements on rotating parts of the vehicle. Measuring the temperatures of the electric motors can help determine if energy is being lost through heat. Minimizing these losses will maximize the vehicle’s overall efficiency. This simplistic solution for temperature measurement is an excellent choice for improving thermal management systems and improving vehicle efficiencies.  Telemetry If available space is limited in the vehicle, MSC recommends using one of their Wireless Telemetry Systems. With options for single and multiple channels, MSC makes it easy to find the perfect amplifiers and thermal management measuring devices for any need. MSC’s telemetry systems also offer the availability of non-contact data collection with options ranging from clamping to high speed in order to get measurements from hard-to-reach areas such as transmissions and compressors. Both the slip ring assemblies and telemetry systems are made with rugged housings, making them ideal to survive in harsh conditions.  Please contact a Michigan Scientific representative to begin discussing your EV testing needs and applications. Grace ParsekianNovember 15, 2023Blog / TransducersThe development and testing of a vehicle’s steering system can be improved and verified through the measurement of steering torque and steering angle using steering wheel transducers. Tests can be done in both the laboratory setting and during normal use. The SW-SR2 and SW-TEL are Steering Wheel Torque Measurement Systems that replace or mount to the vehicle’s original steering wheel and mount to the splined steering shaft. The video below describes the installation of these measurement systems:   SW-SR2 Steering Wheel Transducer The SW-SR2 Steering Wheel Torque and Angle Transducer has the option of mounting to the existing vehicle steering wheel or to replace the existing steering wheel by mounting directly to the splined steering shaft. Additionally, the SW-SR2 is a strain gauge-based sensor made from high-strength stainless steel and is fully temperature compensated. The steering angle signal is generated from a high-resolution inductive encoder. Furthermore, the SW-SR2 has a ±1440 degree multi-turn encoder and both analog and CAN outs. The SW-SR2 utilizes a high-quality Michigan Scientific slip ring assembly for signal transmission. The torque transducer and steer angle sensor are powered and controlled by a Michigan Scientific DIGI-STEER Control Unit. SW-TEL Steering Wheel Transducer The SW-TEL Steering Wheel Torque Transducer mounts to the existing vehicle steering wheel or replaces the existing steering wheel. A precision transducer sends signals wirelessly with far field telemetry. The telemetry package is battery-powered, creating a compact, low-profile assembly to measure torque. Similar to the SW-SR2, this transducer is made from high-grade stainless steel material and it is temperature compensated, ensuring stable output throughout a wide temperature range. The SW-TEL only measures steering torque, while the SW-SR2 measures both steering torque and steering angle. The SW-TEL is more simple to mount and install since it does not have a position restraint. [...] Read more...

Ted NachazelApril 11, 2022Custom Strain Gauge Transducers Michigan Scientific specializes in designing and creating custom strain gauge transducers. Our engineers have expertise in gauging a wide variety of stock components. We develop and fabricate vehicle component strain gauge transducers that measure vehicle suspension forces, powertrain torques, steering component forces, engine and motor loads, and braking torques on vehicles in the field. Michigan Scientific is able to help customers obtain accurate data on the forces experienced by a part, while maintaining its strength and other characteristics as much as possible. Michigan Scientific engineers and technicians have completed applications across several industries. We specialize in custom applications.  Shaft Torque Transducer When applying strain gauges to a shaft, the goal is to obtain accurate data on the forces experienced by the shaft, while changing its strength and other characteristics as little as possible. The shaft then acts as a transducer itself. The strain gauged shaft, now a transducer, can be used in the same way as a standard shaft to measure the forces that occur in normal usage. Half Shaft Strain Gauging We strain gauge OEM half shafts to measure torque. The signals are amplified using our wheel instrumentation package (WIP) before they are transmitted by our ERT slip ring assembly. The ERT can provide speed and angular measurement signals too. The model PS-DC Remote Amplifier Control Unit controls the WIP and supplies power to the ERT. Driveshaft Strain Gauging Driveshafts can be gauged for torque and thrust. Michigan Scientific has developed a compensation bridge to reduce cross-talk from torque into the thrust bridge. After the shaft has been gauged, the data can be transferred from the shaft via telemetry or slip ring.  Crankshaft Transducer One of the more complex examples of a custom strain gauge transducer is creating a crankshaft transducer. Strain gauges are applied on a standard crankshaft in order to measure engine torque. The wires are routed through the crankshaft to connect to spinning amplifiers and a slip ring or telemetry system mounted on the pulley at the front of the engine. In these applications, multiple channels of strain measurements are collected for analysis. Axial Force Gauging Our custom tie rod end transducers can measure the axial forces acting on the tie rod during steering. Tie rod end transducers can replace the inner or outer tie rod end, based on customer needs. The custom tie rod transducer does not take up any additional space underneath the vehicle and no modification to the vehicle is required. Almost all tie rods can be made into custom tie rod transducers.  Shear Pin Transducer Each application is custom designed to fit your application. The transducers are all machined from transducer-grade stainless steel and have a weatherproof coating. Our shear pin transducer is suitable for in-field data collection in addition to laboratory test setups. The shear pin transducer is easily adaptable to a wide variety of applications, is designed to not change the position of other vehicle components, and requires minimal modification to other parts.   Check out our Common Custom Transducers blog for more information on how we instrument parts to be used as transducers. On-Site Strain Gauging     Michigan Scientific is capable of installing strain gauges on-site, at customer locations. Both component and structural applications can be instrumented for measurement and analysis. The customer’s components can be instrumented and data recorded to support a wide range of test and development activities. Components can be recorded during the manufacturing processes or in-service use. Michigan Scientific also has experience instrumenting structural beams for deflection and stress testing. Instrumentation applications range from circuit board instrumentation for monitoring stress, thermal chamber door panel monitored for deformation during manufacturing, and fully instrumented industrial sized drive shafts. In the large drive shaft application, torque, acceleration, and rotational velocity were measured on a 16 inch diameter drive shaft of a large cement plant ball mill. Michigan Scientific also collected and analyzed the data from this project. Michigan Scientific also uses decades of experience to install strain gauges in holes up to six inches deep and with a minimum diameter of 0.5 inches. Data Acquisition and Reporting Michigan Scientific provides on-site and remote data acquisition services for recording instrumented components under test. Additional data processing, analysis, and reporting services are also offered. [...] Read more...
